Mountain House Animal Rescue and Sanctuary The Sanctuary
Mountain House Rescue

Mountain House Animal Rescue and Sanctuary, Inc. was incorporated in September 2002. We are a charitable organization working to shelter, rehabilitate and find homes for abandoned pets. We strive to provide an excellent quality of life to both our long term and short term residents. We normally do between 6-8 dog adoptions a month. All homes are carefully screened, including a homevisit, to insure a good match between the pet and human family. We have also placed goats, and a few cats. Our other residents include horses, ponies, chickens and other poultry.

Mountain House is committed to improving the quality of life for homeless animals by providing a safe haven where this value is of the utmost importance. In 2003 we took in 49 dogs, 1 cat and 5 goats, and were able to place 45 dogs.

We are a volunteer organization devoted to the rescue and care of abandoned and homeless companion animals. We hope to provide a second chance to dogs and cats who would otherwise face death because there is not enough room in currently underfunded and overcrowded shelters. Many of our animals are placed in foster homes where volunteers care for them until someone would like to adopt them.

Our primary objectives are:
  • Rescue of homeless animals
  • Provision of necessary medical care for rescued animals
  • Spay or neuter rescued animals
  • Place adoptable animals into loving, lifelong homes
  • Recruit volunteers
  • Educate the public about responsible pet ownership

The sanctuary is located on 40 acres of land in Placerville, California. We have a variety of animals in our care including horses, chickens, goats and turkeys. The sanctuary environment and rural location enable us to assess how the animals we have for adoption handle a variety of interactions and situations. We take the time to get to know each animal well enough to pursue an adoptive placement we deem safe and beneficial to both the animal and their new family. Our goal is a permanent placement, however due to unforeseen complications we will accept a former adoptee back into our sanctuary. We hope all of our animals will find families who love them for life.
